  • A religious movement called the Great Awakening started in the 1730s because people were losing their religious faith. Preachers held revival meetings where they gave strong speeches to the people. This movement began to spread the idea of equality which led to the American Revolution.
  • Tea Act

  • Each colony elected their own assembly. Assemblies decided how tax money should be spent. The colonies were a democracy in which white, land-owning men over the age of 21 could vote.
  • Coercive / Intolerable Acts

  • Parliament passed the Stamp Act which meant that colonist had to pay taxes for papers and documents and it was shown by a stamp. Colonists created the Stamp Act Congress to protest this act.
  • Declaration of Independence
  • 1776
  • Parliament passed the tea act which meant that colonists could only buy tea from the British companies. Colonists then disguised themselves and threw the tea into the harbor. This protest was called the Boston Tea Party.
  • The coercive acts that parliament passed said that the Boston Harbor was closed until tea was paid for, Massachusetts was under British control, and more troops were sent to enforce the acts. Colonists created the First Continental Congress and decided to boycott British goods, offer peace to the king, and raise a military.
  • A group of men gathered to sign a document that declared that the colonies would now be independent states, not under the control of Great Britain. It was written by a man named Thomas Jefferson.
