  • Texas V. Johnson 1989
  • Put that flag down, you are violating the law!!
  • You are violating the Texas statute that prevented the desecration of a venerated object, including the American flag, if such action were likely to incite anger in others.
  • But it's symbolic speech! I cannot be arrested, this is my first amendment right!
  • I need help, I should not be in here. This is not fair because I have freedom of speech.
  • The flag's unique status as a symbol of national unity outweighs "symbolic speech" concerns, and thus, the government should lawfully prohibit flag burning.
  • But, flag burning constitutes a form of "symbolic speech" that is protected by the First Amendment. Freedom of speech protects actions that society may find very offensive, but society's outrage alone is not justification for suppressing free speech.
  • IM FREEEEEE!!!!! I won, and the first amendment should always be preserved. I'm free because my actions did not hurt anybody. Just because the majority does not agree with my bias actions, my rights should never be suppressed.
