Storyboard Text

  • When two elements combine, they form a chemical compound in a synthesis reaction.
  • This compound is shown above, as each reactant bonds to form only one product. The "subjects" are now married.
  • When another reactant comes along, such as redhead Sarah, one of the elements in the compound can be replaced to form a different compound.
  • This is shown here, as Sarah combines with Mark, leaving Lily to fend for herself. This is called a single replacement reaction.
  • If Sarah wasn't in the picture and Lilly and Mark decided to separate on their own, this would be called a decomposition reaction.
  • As shown here, decomposition happens when one reactant undergoes a chemical reaction resulting in the creation of two or more products.
