Storyboard Text
When two elements combine, they form a chemical compound in a synthesis reaction.
This compound is shown above, as each reactant bonds to form only one product. The "subjects" are now married.
When another reactant comes along, such as redhead Sarah, one of the elements in the compound can be replaced to form a different compound.
This is shown here, as Sarah combines with Mark, leaving Lily to fend for herself. This is called a single replacement reaction.
If Sarah wasn't in the picture and Lilly and Mark decided to separate on their own, this would be called a decomposition reaction.
As shown here, decomposition happens when one reactant undergoes a chemical reaction resulting in the creation of two or more products.
