Cinderella was based on a Greek woman named Rhodopis, which means "rosy-cheeked. She was captured, and taken to Egypt where she was sold through slavery. The slave-owner realized how beautiful, and bought her a pair of golden shoes. A pharaoh noticed her beauty, too, and wanted to make her one of his wives. They ended up together, but her new life probably didn't grant her the happiness she actually wanted.
