- Mathilde was born into a family of clerks and she has married a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instructions. She felt tortured and unlucky.
- Climax
- One day, Loisel, his husband got an invitation from the palace of the Ministry on Monday evening, January 18th. However, Mathilda has not a proper dress and luxury jewelry.
- Falling Action
- His husband gave her four hundred francs to buy a pretty dress but laid aside to treat himself to buy a gun and shoot larks on the plain of Nanterre with friends. She also lent a dazzling necklace with a black satin box from Mme.Forestier.
- Resolution
- On the day ball arrived, Mathilde was prettier than them all and caught a lot of attention, also remarked by the minister himself. They took a cab and went home, but all of sudden the necklace was gone.
- They looked for the necklace everywhere but haven’t found it, and they try to buy the same necklace. They finally found the Palais Royal and it cost thirty-four thousand francs, so they worked so hard and don't have time to rest. 
- Finally, she apologized for the delay in returning the necklace. After a few years later, Mathilde was told by Jeane that the necklace she had borrowed was an imitation
