- Elie's father has a colic attack and is slapped. Elie does not even respond. He is petrified. He is not the same man he once was.
- Appointment
- A-7713?
- That's me.
- The Jews go through a medical check-up. The dentist is looking for gold teeth to tear out. Elie does have a gold crown which he will have to deal with later.

- The block secretary summons Elie to send him to the dentist to have his crown removed. He is referred to only as A-7713 (given to him previously) and he responds to it. It is now his identity.
