  • What is kinetic molecular theory? Kinetic molecular theory is a fundamental theory of matter that explains physical properties in terms of the motion of atoms and molecules.
  • But what do you need to know first? Here are the fundamentals. Firstly, what is thermal energy? Thermal energy is the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy of the particles that make up an object. Heat is the flow of thermal energy. Now you may ask - what is heat, potential, and kinetic energy?
  • Kinetic energy is energy due to motion. A speeding bullet, a walking person, the rapid movement of molecules in the air that produces heat, and electromagnetic radiation, such as sunlight, all have kinetic energy.
  • Potential energy is stored energy that depends upon the relative position of various parts of a system. It is something that has the potential to have motion of move.
  • Heat is the movement of thermal energy from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. It is determined by how fast molecules are moving.
  • What are pure substances? Pure substances are materials that have a constant composition and distinctive chemical property.
