- Stanley Yelnats gets wrongly accused of stealing a pair of famous shoes after walking home from school. He gets sent to Camp Green Lake to learn from his mistakes by digging holes.
- Climax
- Stanley has to dig holes every day and eventually makes an alliance with Zero. Stanley teaches him to read while Zero digs half of Stanley's hole. Some camp members got jealous and beat up Stanley. During this time Stanley finds an important item that the Warden seeks interest in. The officials treat the campers in a bad way making Stanley lie about the location.
- Falling Action
- Zero runs away because of the unfair treatment and Stanley follows shortly after to escape the horrid place. Stanley has no hope of finding Zero alive but to his surprise he is.
- Resolution
- Both Zero and Stanley escape successfully from the camp but have a very long adventure ahead of them to find the Big Thumb. On their way there they find food and water and face lots of difficulties. They come up with a master plan for survival.
- Stanley Yelnats and Zero come up with a plan to return back to camp and steal the suitcase that the Warner wants. They end up being unsuccessful and are caught. To top it all off they are covered with the deadly lizard and cannot move.
- After hours of standing still the lizards finally come off of Zero and Stanley. Lawyers and investigators find the camp and help the two boys get to safety with the suitcase. The camp gets shut down and Zero and Stanley gets lots of money.
