Storyboard Text

  • The United States declares war
  • On June 17, 1812,James Madison declared war on Great Britain. They had three main reasons as to why they did. Impressment of sailors, ships getting taken over, and they believed British were instigating Indian Rebellions.
  • Battle at Fort McHenry
  • 
  • August 15 and 16 of 1812, the General surrendered after English and Indian troops were surrounding Detroit. Tecumseh was the leader of the Indian troops who needed help keeping the Americans off their lands. He later died while helping the British. After his death, most Native Americans were no longer helping the British.
  • Battle of Detroit
  • Treaty of Ghent 
  • Battle of New Orleans
  • On August 24, 1814 British troops marched into Washington DC and set fire to the capital and other landmarks. The battle ended in a British Victory. The War Hawks pushed for this battle to happen.
  • Battle of Washington DC
  •  Francis Scott Key was a volunteer to aid the General. He watched as the British bombarded the fort and saw the flag still flying above it which inspired him to write the Star Spangled Banner.
  • On December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed to end the war. All conquered land was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada. After the Treaty, they were never able to put an end to the British impressment of American sailors.
  • Andrew Jackson led a poorly equipped, small army to victory against 8,000 British troops at the battle of New Orleans. He was known as a hero and then was declared the seventh president of the US. At this time both troops were unaware the treaty was signed.
