Storyboard Text

  • This scene is showing the setting of the story. The story takes place in Louise's home. Here, Louise just found out about the passing of her husband Brently. Her sister and husbands friend came to tell her. This room is all gloomy and dark, just like her circumstance.
  • “Go away. I am not making myself ill.”
  • “Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door — you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door.”
  • This scene shows the internal conflict that Louise is feeling. Louise starts to see that she isn't sad about Brently. She battles her thoughts and feelings , though, because the death of a spouse is supposed to be sad and mournful.
  • This scene shows the characterization. Louise understands now that she is not upset about Brently, she is happy, in fact, overjoyed. She didn't even like being with him. He was only weighing her down. She just realizes it now.
  • This scene is showing dialogue. Josephine, Louise's sister, begs her to get out of the room because she knows it's unhealthy to cry all day. But she doesn't know that Louise isn't hurt. She just assumes so because it makes sense to be sobbing.
  • This scene is showing the theme. Louise fantasized about finally being independent and enjoying her days. Freedom is hers. Now she is finally happy about having a long life ahead of her. She knows that her life is better alone. She is free at last, without him.
  • “Free! Body and soul free!”
  • The irony in this story takes place at the end when Louise sees Brently. It's situational. He was assumed dead but he wasn't even there at the accident. Louise was so hurt. Her weak heart couldn't handle the thought of having her new freedom stolen, in result, she drops dead.
