Storyboard Text

  • Slave traders kidnapped Africans and separated families. They stole men, women, and children. Sometimes they stole kids while their parents were gone.
  • In the 1500s, West Africans were taken from their homes and forced to walk to the coast. Once they got to the coast, they were put on ships and sailed to the colonies.
  • On the ships slaves endured harsh living conditions. If they didn't eat, they would be whipped and beat until they did. If slaves got sick, the crew didn't want the rest of the slaves to be infected, so they were thrown overboard. Sharks would follow the ships feeding on dead bodies that were thrown overboard.
  • I'm so happy I get to relax in my cozy house while my slaves work for me. I love being lazy.
  • The slaves that survived the voyage to the colonies were then auctioned off to the colonists. They would be used as free labor.
  • Slaves worked in the fields or in their master's homes. Very few slaves ever became free. If they refused to do their work, slaves were severely punished or killed.
  • Slaves worked tirelessly while their masters relaxed and did what they wanted to.
