  • The Plaza Hotel at Central Park - Daisy announces that she loved Tom once and Gatsby seems to realize he is losing hope and Daisy is pulling away.
  • Pg. 132 - “I did love him once-but I loved you too”.
  • Daisy, Tom, Nick, Gatbsy and Jordan are sitting in the salon of Tom’s house on one of the hottest days of the summer. Daisy offers that they all spend some time in town, hoping to spend some private time with Gatsby. The idea is to also inform Tom of their secret relationship and Daisy’s plan to leave Tom for Gatsby.
  • Myrtle is killed.
  • “That God damned coward! He didn’t even stop his car” (141).
  • “Well I tried to swing the wheel-”
  • Wilson decides that he needs to take Mrytle out West after he discovers she is having an affair. He is unsure of who the other man is, but he knows he must whisk her away nevertheless. Knowing this was something Myrtle had also been dreaming of doing, Tom is shocked that she would forget and leave him behind.
  • Nick discovers that it was Daisy who was driving when Myrtle was killed by the car.
  • “Was Daisy driving?”
  • The simple plan Daisy and Gatsby had crafted to tell Tom is falling to pieces. Gatsby seems to be realizing that the past five years do matter to Daisy and they can’t simply pick up where they left off. With Gatsby’s still slightly mysterious business being exposed and the history between Daisy and Tom still evident, their hope to build a future together is slipping away.
  • Gatsby is left standing outside the windows of Daisy’s house, “watching over nothing” (145).
  • After being released from the room she was locked in, Myrtle runs out of the garage and tries to hail down and stop Gatsby’s car, believing Tom to be driving. However, with another car traveling in the other direction, Myrtle is caught in the situation and is killed by Gatsby’s car. Tom, Nick, and Jordan arrive on the scene a while later, with Tom appearing shocked and outraged at such a significant change in his life
  • Initially, Nick was rather disgusted as he believed Gatsby was responsible for Myrtle’s death. But he deduces it was actually Daisy driving the car. As a way to protect Daisy and win back her trust, Gatsby claims that he will be the scapegoat for the accident.
  • “Yes”
  • Before this moment, Nick describes watching Daisy and Tom in the kitchen intently discussing the night’s events with a sort of intimacy. Gatsby continues to ensure Daisy’s safety with Tom while standing outside the home, planning on waiting until he is sure she is fine. Nick comments he is “watching over nothing”, as there is nothing left for Gatsby to protect or salvage (145).
