- He will complain because of the long walk and hunger. We have to leave him!
- Salva is an 11 year old boy who lives in Southern Sudan. Salva is part of a tribe of people in Africa called the Dinka. He is having a normal day at school. Salva is looking at the teacher,but not paying attention to what he is saying. Salva is daydreaming. He is thinking about his life, family, and chores that he has to do when he returns home. However, this one day will change the direction of his life forever.

- Salva, is that you?
- Uncle, yes it's me.
- All of a sudden there is a series of gunshots. The class does not know where the gunshots are coming from, but they assume it is from the fighting of the war between the Dinka and Nuer tribes. Salva and the rest of the children cannot go home. They must flee to "the bush". This sparks the long journey of walking for Salva.

- On his journey, Salva finds a group of women and children. He walks a long ways with them until they find a barn to sleep in. During the night the group leaves without Salva. They leave because they think that he will complain. He is now left alone in a barn on his own. Salva finds an old woman who feeds him. She soon has to leave her home because of the fighting. She tells Salva that he cannot travel with her, because the soldiers will not suspect an old woman traveling to be a threat.

- After the old woman leaves, a group of people appear. There are two Dinkas among the group. Overtime the group grows larger.Salva is wondering around to see if there is anyone he recognizes. He then finds his Uncle Jewiir. At last Salva has found someone he knows. Salva also meets a friend, Marial who is the same hieght, age, and has the same stride length as him. Now Salva has a family member and friend by his side. He does not have to wander alone anymore.
- After a couple of weeks the refugees arrive in Ethiopia. They feel comfortable enough to settle down to sleep as a group. While everyone is sleeping Marial, Salva's new friend wonders off. Uncle Jewiir awakens Salva to tell him that his friend is dead. "No one knows where he went, but he was most likely killed by a lion", said Uncle Jeiir. Now Salva has lost his best and only friend.
- A couple more weeks later, while the refugees are walking three Nuer soldiers approach the group. They tell Uncle Jewiir to drop his gun. When he does they tie him to a tree. The other soldiers tell everyone to empty their pockets. For once Salva is thankful to be the youngest one in the group. Then all of a sudden three gun shots go off. Salva's uncle is motionless. After Uncle Jewiir and Marial's death, Salva some how feels the courage,bravery, and strength to keep moving forward.
