Storyboard Text

  • What is sickle cell anemia and how does an individual body code for it?
  • Well, to start, sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder where red blood cells develop sickle-shaped, or in the shape of bananas.
  • An individual body codes for sickle cell anemia through the genes on DNA, found in the nucleus of a cell, when there’s a mutation in the HBB gene of hemoglobin, a molecule found inside red blood cells.
  • Sickle cell is so dangerous because the abnormal red blood clump together and block the blood flow, which causes major internal problems.#160;
  • Sickle cell is caused by a gene mutation called HBB located on chromosome 11. A mutation in HBB results in a change in one of the bases in the DNA sequence from an A to a T.
  • The body produces a new form of hemoglobin with sickle cell, it’s called HbS whereas a normal hemoglobin is called HbA.
