Storyboard Text

  • Are you okay? You seem mad at me. You've hardly said two words since you got home.
  • Nope- everything is fine.
  • Hmm.. usually she is so relaxed and open with me. She is denying anything is wrong, however her non verbal communication tells me otherwise.
  • Maybe she is upset I never cook dinner...
  • Ugh! I hate coming home from a long day of work and having to cook dinner every. single. night! I wish I could get more help around here.
  • *meow*
  • No, not at all. I'm just tired and emotional. It's been a long day. Let's just order take out.
  • Are you sure you are okay? Are you maybe upset because I didn't offer to cook while you were at work?
  • Jenny was not genuine toward Tom in the first scenario as she was not able to express her thoughts or feelings openly with him, and her verbal communication was not congruent with her non verbal communication.
  • In the next scenario, Jenny is genuine toward Tom by discussing how she is feeling and assertively communicating with him in a clear, direct and respectful way.
  • Are you okay? You seem mad at me. You've hardly said two words since you got home.
  • I'm not mad at you, Tom. But I am feeling very overwhelmed with all my responsibilities at work and home and I would really appreciate it if you would cook dinner a few times a week to share the load.
  • Oh no! I had no idea how you were feeling. Thank you for being open and real with me.
  • It's okay- I realize that when I send false signals of how I am feeling that it is hard for you to relax around me because you can't trust that what I am saying is actually how I am feeling.
  • Let's just get take out tonight and you can cook tomorrow!
  • Deal! I appreciate your genuineness even when it is challenging to confront me with your feelings. Cheers to healthy communication!
