- My name is Toussaint Breda and I am here to end slavery. I have seen too many people suffer. Although Slave revolts from this time normally end in executions and failure, this one will be different.

- Six months later, Napoleon leaned towards giving up his colonies in the New World. Dessalines declared Haiti a free republic in the name of the Haitian people on January 1, 1804. Many years later, in exile at St. Helena, when he was asked about his dishonorable treatment of Toussaint, Napoleon replied, "What could the death of one wretched Negro mean to me?" It was Napoleon who would lose his rule and die in prison. At the end, Haiti remained free.
