- A young boy comes from a "broken home with an alcoholic father", turning him towards the Ku Klux Klan, a "safe haven" for him.

- Du Bois, a scholar, educator, philosopher, and social activist grew up in a predominantly white town. When he first started schooling, in his teen years, he witnessed firsthand the hindrances African-Americans faced.

- Daryl Davis was in Cub Scouts and participated in an all-white march, but was thrown at with bottles, debris, and sidewalk trash. This was his first direct contact with racism.
