Recently, in NYC, drastic changes in the environment can be seen. There's been a higher frequency of heavy rain, higher temperature, and rising sea level.
A dark colored roof can reach a temperature of 170 degrees. This is an environmental impact in which people don't really look at, but it's impact is widespread.
Dark colored roof can absorb up to 95% of the sun's rays, contributing to the Urban Island Heat Effect. NYC is 5°F hotter then it’s surrounding areas due to the black roofs, roads and etc.
In a poorly ventilated building, the attic will be extremely hot. The temperature of the roof stresses the air conditioning of he building, as it attempts to maintain a certain temperature. The high temperature of the roof also stresses the building material, and weakens the building structural integrity.
All these negative impacts of dark colored roof, without reflective covering can lead to millions of dollars wasted on fixing the building structure. If we continue going on like this, the energy usages and carbon emission of NYC buildings will only grow.
A solution to this ongoing issue is installation of a green roof. A green roof “a layer of vegetation planted over a waterproofing system that is installed on top of a flat or slightly–sloped roof.”
