Brian Stevenson, a young lawyer, began representing Walter McMillan. Walter is a successful and respectful black business owner of a logging company who had an interracial affair with a white woman named Karen Kelly.
Walter is blamed for the murder of Ronda Morrison, even though he's innocent. Since he had the interracial affair with Karen Kelly, people assumed he was goult. Ralph Myers lied to the police about the murder and blamed an innocent man which was Walter.
Walter is arrested for sodomy because the police wouldn't be able to prove he was the murderer. Ralph Myers was eventually arrested for the murder also. Walter was placed on death row, where he sat there for 6 years. Walter contacts Stevenson and Stevenson attempts to get a retail and post conviction relief for Walter. Although, the political discrimination and corruption made it difficult.
Walter is released off of death row. He was interviewed by local, state, and national media outlets with Stevenson. Walter arrives home welcomed by many friends and family members.
Walter McMillan is innocent.
Walter moves to Florida to live with his sisters. He continued to open up more and more about his prison experience. After a few months he returned to Monroe although Stevenson felt uneasy about it. Stevenson raised a few hundred thousand dollars for Walter because he relieved non money from the prison. Walter started his logging business, by suffered a neck injury making the business come to an end.
Walter begins drinking heavily and getting lost in town. Stevenson finds out Walter has advanced dementia, so Walter begins staying in a nursing home. Walter's health was declining rapidly. One day he fell and broke his hip putting him in the hospital, where he passes on September 11th, 2013
