- Lincoln Elected
- Lincoln wins the election!
- The South Secedes
- South- you violated our contract, therefore we are leaving the union
- North- Okay
- Attempt at Compromise
- Because the Democrats were very divided on what they wanted, Lincoln was able to pull out a win. Lincoln got 40% of the popular votes and won every Nothern state.
- The Confederacy
- We are allowed to leave because it was our decision to come!
- The South did not approve Lincoln being president and thought their ways would be violated. To avoid this, the South left the Union.
- Reactions to Secession
- The secession is going to tear our country apart!
- Because people wanted to preserve the Union, they settled on the 36 degree line. Anything North the the line was a free state and anything South was a slave state.
- Presidential Responses
- The secession should not be permitted!
- The states were able to leave the Union becuase of the "state's rights''. They states that because they joined the Union volentarily, they were able to leave at their own discretion.
- There were many mixed emotions on what people thought about the secretion. Some were pleased with it and others thought that it was tearing the country apart more then it already was.
- Yay for the secession! It should have happened a long time ago
- Both Lincoln and Buchanan thought that the secession should not be allowed.
