Storyboard Text

  • The French had lived along the Mississippi River and Great Lakes for some time, establishing fur trading posts. In the 1740s, the British colonists began moving west from the colonies. This caused a conflict over the Ohio River Valley area.
  • Now THAT is some nice land!
  • Back off bub! The Ohio River Valley is ours!
  • The Lieutenant governor of Virginia sent militia, led by colonel George Washington, to go protect an English fort in the Ohio Valley. While there, they saw the French building Fort Duquesne. For protection, the English built Fort Necessity 40 miles away.
  • Ay, look! It's Fort Duquesne!
  • Yes, it is! We should build a stockade nearby!
  • In 1754, delegates from 7 colonies met in Albany, NY, to make a program to protect them from the French. Benjamin Franklin and his committee proposed the Albany Plan of Union. It called for the colonies to form a federal government that would be led by a president. None of the colonies wanted to give up their power.

  • Edward Braddock was a British General sent to the colonies to command the troops. George Washington was his aide. General Braddock sent troops back to Fort Duquesne, where they were defeated by the French again, and Braddock was killed. George Washington had to lead the retreat out of French territory. This marks the official start of the war when Britain declares war on France.

  • In 1757, William Pitt became secretary of state. He was confident he could defeat the French. He planned to seize the French colonies instead of fighting in Europe. The British quickly began winning more and more battles.
  • I am sure that I can save this country, and nobody else can!
  • In February of 1763, after France surrendered, the Treaty of Paris was signed, which ended the war. Now, Great Britain had control over all French territory in North America. They were a dominant force. colonists celebrated this victory with Britain.
