The SS was whipping Ellie for walking in on him with the Polish girl. Ellie in this instance is fighting against the whip of the SS.
Man vs. Self

Ellie and the other Jews we fighting against the harsh climate. The had to push through the violent winds and frigid temperatures.
Man vs. Society
"All hearts trembled, but mostly with envy. He was the onewho had dared" (Wiesel 59).
Ellie had the mindset that in that moment or moments ago he was greater than nature and he had beaten it. He seemed to be describing himself as almost God like.
Zalman was trying to fight against his pain. He was competing with himself and just trying to keep moving.
The man was crawling to steal some soup from the pot. He was the one who actually tried so he was going against society.
