After a win in Chancellorsville, Lee and the Confederate wanted to invade the north. The Union on the other hand, was less confident after their recent loss in battle.
As Hill's command reached the town, they found Union brigades. Lee then gave orders for the Confederates to attack at Cemetery Hill, but Ewell refused to give the order.
Finally engaging in battle, Lee decided to attack. They attacked around 4 p.m. and fought for several more hours, suffering 35,000 casualties from both sides
Known as Pickett's Charge, the Confederates led an infantry assault against Meade's troops. They got held up and lost effectiveness, making the charge a fail.
Lee and his men waited for a counter attack, but they never got the chance. The Confederates withdrew their army, and the Union won the battle of Gettysburg
After the battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln made his famous Gettysburg Address about the struggle for liberty and equality.
