Roderick has written a letter to Frederick, in the letter, it requested Frederick to visit Roderick.
Roderick welcomed Frederick entusiastically, but Frederick could not recognize Roderick.
Frederick discovered that many sounds and sights that are pleasing to him cause unnecessary responses in Roderick.
One day, Frederick asked Roderick why he was so gloomy. Roderick confessed that he was sad because his beloved sister Madeline was very sick, and her death would leave Roderick as the last of the ancient race of the Ushers.
What is tormenting you, why are you so despondent?
That night Madeline died, she had left Roderick as the last of the Ushers. Frederick helped Roderick with the entombment. They carefullly placed Madeline's tomb in the dungeon. After Madeline died Roderick became very depressed. He would sit in the dungeon waiting as if listening to an imaginary sound.
Frederick! Frederick! Madeline has died! She has left me!
A few days passed, and each of those days was exactly as the day after Madeline had died. Roderick would stay in the dungeon listening to some imaginary sound, while Frederick would stay in his room. At about 5:00 pm Roderick burst into Frederick's room and declared that they had buried Madeline alive.
