Storyboard Text

  • The battle of Fort Sumter took place on April 12, 1861. It was the battle that started the Civil War. It was between the new CSA and a federal fort in Charleston SC.
  • The First Battle of Bull Run took place on July 21, 1861. It was the second battle of the Civil War, and it showed people that the war would be bloody and long.
  • The naval battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia took place on March 6, 1862. It was the first battle between ironclad boats, and it changed naval warfare forever.
  • After months of siege, the port city of New Orleans finally surrendered. This gave the US control of the bottom part of the Mississippi River, therefore they could start to split the CS in two.
  • The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862. It was the single bloodiest day in the war, and it was unclear who won the battle. However, General Lee had to retreat back to Virginia, and General McClellan of the Union decided not to go after him and finish off his army. 
  • The Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 1-3, 1863. It occurred because CS troops ran into US troops while trying to get supplies. It was the bloodiest battle of the war. The battle ended with Lee being driven back into Virginia, though he wasn't finished off once again.
