  • Before the French Revolution, France was divided into three classes that were called states. The first estate was the clergy, the second estate was the nobility, and the third estate was everyone else. This system was unfair because the third estate paid all the taxes.
  • The French Revolution officially began when the Storming of Bastille took place. This took place in July of 1789. It was a state prison in Paris. France. The people were hoping to free the prisoners kept there and were also in search of large quantities of ammunition and weapons. 
  • This was following the creation of the First French Republic, it was a series of massacres where numerous public executions took place. This finally ended when Maximilian Robespierre president of the National Convention Committee of Public Safety, was arrested and executed successfully.
