- But Fernand Mondego looked on with hatred and envy as Dantes walked, unknowingly, by.

- Dantes walked into the tavern and Mercedes rushed forward to greet him in her white gown. It seemed as if everything was perfect.
- But, as the festivities were about to begin, Fernand rushes in, taking Mercedes hand and proclaiming his love for her.
- I LOVE YOU!
- Fernand had expected that Mercedes, seeing his dedication and sincerity, would accept his marriage proposal on the spot. But, as it was her engagement party, she declined once more and swore to never have anything to do with him because of his childish behavior.
