The king was very distant from his citizens of France. king Louis lived in Versailles while his people lived in Paris. He believed that he had been put in this place of power by God therefore it was his right to throw huge parties while his people slaved over fields. Most people along with the king believed that DROK was right and the only way.

HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PAY ALL OF THESE DUMB TAXES AND FEED OURSELVES?
LETS PUT THE KINGS HEAD ON A STCIK!
France was in deep debt from king Louis starting wars, trying to expand his land, but failing. In order to fix this, the Parlement agreed to heavily tax their citizens instead. The citizens could not afford to pay for these expensive and inconsistent taxes. There was also food shortages, and the prices skyrocketed.
France suffered from bad weather conditions. Drought, cold temperatures and then a dry season. This led to crop failure and famine. Famine led to starvation and moreover abandonment of children, as people could barely afford to feed themselves. Because of the shortage of crops, bread became scarce. The price skyrocketed, and was often being stolen. If the bakers were caught with any extra bread in possession they would be put through the guillotine.
People were angry about how they were being treated, and so they often made mobs. They were so heavily taxed that many of them resorted to begging, scavenging, committing petty crimes, and prostitution. the people also made their own government to fight against the king and his parliament. this ended in violence, storming the king's palace and killing many people.
