  • THAT IS NOT FAIR! WE WERE LOYAL TO YOU! BE LOYAL TO US!

  • In 1793, France and Great Britain went to war. The united States remained neutral and continued to trade with both countries.
  • You will go to France and restore the peace.
  • Yes sir.
  • France became angry at the United States since they felt the US should support them after they supported the US through their revolution.
  • No! No! Not a sixpence!
  • HOW DARE YOU?!
  • In 1795, when the British signed a treaty with the US that would solve most of their issues, France believed that was the ultimate betrayal and begin to seize US vessels. 
  • HOW DARE THEY!
  • WAR!
  • Here are the documents of Mr.X, Mr.Y, and Mr.Z trying to bribe us.
  • THEY WILL NOT GET AWAY WITH THIS!
  • WAR!
  • In 1797, newly elected president John Adams sent three diplomats to, Charles Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry, to France to try and restore the peace.
  • However, France's foreign minister Charles de Talleyrand delayed the meeting, and eventually sends three secret agents to try and convince the US diplomats to offer France a low-interest loan and give him a substantial bribe. This offended the Americans.
  • WE WANT A LOW-INTEREST LOAN AND A SUBSTANTIAL BRIBE!
  • This caused chaos back in the United States, with the Americans being offended they wanted to declare war on France for the disrespectful treatment. Congress demanded to see the documents where France stated these terms. President Adams replaced the names of the three French agents with Mr.X, Mr.Y, and Mr.Z.
