  • I apologize...
  • Jonas will be our new reciever of the memories!
  • Ten years ago, we made a mistake...
  • At the end of the ceremony of twelve, the Chief Elder spoke up again. "I have caused you anxiety," she observed. "I apologize to my community" . Then, she apologized to Jonas, because she skipped him at the ceremony of twelve. She then told him to come up to the stage.
  • Intelligence
  • Integrity
  • Courage
  • "Jonas has not been assigned," she began. Jonas suddenly felt rejected. He had no assignment. But, the Chief Elder continued talking. "Jonas has been selected." Jonas didn't understand what the Chief Elder had said for a moment. "Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory."
  • You can see beyond...
  • The Chief Elder started talking about the history of the Receivers, on how the last selection of a Receiver had failed ten years ago. She explained to Jonas and the whole community on how the rare and honorful job was also different from all the other assignments. Jonas was to be separated from the others.
  • JONAS. JONAS. JONAS. JONAS.
  • "Jonas was identified as a possible Reciever many years ago... he has shown all the qualities that a Receiver must have" continued the Chief Elder. Jonas was intelligent, he had integrity, he was courageous, and he would develop wisdom throughout his job.
  • But most important of all, Jonas could see beyond. Nobody else in the community could do so, explained the Chief Elder. Even she couldn't. At that moment, Jonas saw a glimmer of 'beyond' for a moment. That was when he started to believe in his job.
  • The Chief Elder left Jonas with his own devices that moment. She left the stage for him, the new Receiver of Memory. That was when the crowd started to chant his name. "JONAS. JONAS. JONAS." He was being accepted into his new job.
