- The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by the British at the end of the French and Indian War to appease Native Americans by checking the encroachment of European settlers on their. landsThis angered the colonists. They felt the Proclamation was a plot to keep them under the strict control of England and that the British only wanted them east of the mountains so they could keep an eye on them.
- The Tea Act of 1773
- Instead of levying a duty on trade goods, the Stamp Act imposed a direct tax on the colonists. Specifically, the act required that, starting in the fall of 1765, legal documents and printed materials must bear a tax stamp provided by commissioned distributors who would collect the tax in exchange for the stamp.
- The Intolerable Acts
- The Townshend Acts were a series of laws passed by the British government on the American colonies in 1767. They placed new taxes and took away some freedoms from the colonists including the following: New taxes on imports of paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. Established an American Customs Board in Boston to collect taxes. Set up new courts in America to prosecute smugglers (without using a local jury). Gave British officials the right to search colonists' houses and businesses.
- The Quartering Acts
- In an effort to save the troubled enterprise, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act in 1773. The act granted the company the right to ship its tea directly to the colonies without first landing it in England, and to commission agents who would have the sole right to sell tea in the colonies.
- The Intolerable Acts were punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea Party. The laws were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest in reaction to changes in taxation by the British Government.
- Passed June 2, 1774, the Quartering Act was designed to improve housing options for regular troops stationed in the colonies. It seeks to address American doubts about "whether troops can be quartered otherwise than in barracks" if barracks were already provided for them by provincial and local authorities.
