Storyboard Text

  • I know it may feel like a lot of work, but scientifically that is not work. Work is when an object is moved over a distance by an external force. There also must be displacement in the direction of the force. Force is the push or pull on an object with mass that causes it to change velocity. Work is measured in units called joules So, therefore, since you are walking at a constant velocity, and there is no change in the object's velocity, you are not completing scientific work and accomplished 0 joules of work.
  • Ugh! Carrying this bag around the mall is so much work! I am exhausted!
  • Work is anything that has a source of exerted force that results in an object's movement of distance, within the necessary qualities. An example of work is if I were to lift up a boulder. I would. exerted the force necessary to lift the boulder up and the boulder would move a distance upwards as a result from my applied force, therefore this action would be considered work.
  • Then what would be considered work, and what is an example?
  • Great question! See, humans can not as easily complete work just like Superman who obtains infinite strength, however we do has machines that help us accomplish this. There are six fundamental simple machines which are levers, wheel and axles, pulleys, inclined planes, screws, and wedges. Each one of these machine helps us complete work for efficiently and by using less effort. We utilize these machine to our advantage to make work significantly easier, but to complete the same end results of work accomplished.
  • How can I accomplish work if it takes lifting a boulder to do so?
  • Effort is the force required by a machine in order to complete work on a load. A load is the object, surface, or body one is exerting force upon.An example of a useful simple machine is a Crain. A Crain is a complex pulley system built to lift heavy building supplies too high heights. This makes work for humans significantly easier because we are able to lift these heavy, large weights with less force required. This is great because we accomplish the same task with t the same ending result and distance, but with less force.
  • What is effort? And what is an example of a simple machine ?
  • To begin with, to help you with your shopping trips you could use a cart with wheels to carry your hundreds of bags around and actually accomplish work. However, most of the simple machines and compound machines we utilize their advantages, we do not recognize. for insistence, scissors, seesaws, wheelbarrows, wheelchairs, fans, door stops, mousetraps, screws, staircases, and more! It is absolutely endless with the amount of inventions. of machine!
  • How could I utilize these advantages of simple machines in my daily life?
  • Thank you so much for this informative lesson,Tim. I know the importance of simple machine by them helping us accomplish work more efficiently and productively, without difficulty. I also now know how to recognize various simple machine within my everyday life.
  • It was my pleasure! Now let me help you carry all your bags before you fall over!
