Napoleon was born in 1769 on the island of Corsica, Which was part of France and Southeast of Italy. When he was only 9 years old he was sent off to military school. In 1785, he finished school at the age of 16 and became the lieutenant in the artillery.
In October 1795, royalists marched on the National Convention. That's when Napoleon and his gunners greeted the thousands of loyalists with cannonade. From then on he was known as a hero in France. In 1795, the Directory appointed Napoleon to lead the French army against the forces of Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia. After failing to take Egypt he had a sudden seizure of power or coup d'Etat.
After taking power one of his first tasks was to fix the economy. Napoleon set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system. He also ended most corruption in the government by dismissing corrupt officials and set up lycees, or government run public schools. The only thing he did not change was religion, Napoleon signed a concordat, or agreement, with Pope Pius VII. This prevented the Church from intervening with National affairs.
Napolean wanted to expand the empire past Europe so he decided to tske Haiti. This place produced tons of sugar and he knew from there it would be easier to try to conqour America.
One of Napoleans biggest mistakes was deciding to fight Russia. He arrived with 380000 and ended with about only 22000 soldiers. He was then exiled to a island Elba where he was suppose to spend the rest of his life. But after awhile he was able to escape and come back to France as emperor again.
After coming back and seizing power he fought on of his last battle of waterloo, after the loss of that he went to the island of St. Helena where he spent 7 years under before eventually dying of stomach cancer.
