  • The Stamp Act
  • You have a stamp on that right?
  • Have you heard about the new taxes?
  • the Townshed Acts
  • Yes, they are really outrageous huh?
  • The Boston Massacre
  • One of Britain's governments greatest problems was paying off all the debt the French and Indian War created. The people in Great Britain were already paying a lot of taxes so for George Grenville it seemed obvious to tax the Americans. So a new law was passed where they needed to buy a stamp for each peace of paper used. They saw it as unfair and against their rights so they protested and scared and nearly killed tax collectors, but after a couple months parliament repealed the act.
  • The Tea Act
  • Get some tea for only $0.30
  • The Townshend Acts were basically laws that were passed so they would be taxed on items from Great Britain such as glass, paint, paper, and tea. The colonists were furious because they were taxed without consent or representation.
  • The Boston Tea Party
  • In 1768 Britain sent troops of British soldiers to try and command order. The Bostonians resented them and called them names like "lobsterbacks" and antagonized them because they knew they were not allowed to shoot them. On March 5, 1770 and angry mob came and started throwing ice balls and rocks. Some people speculate that what happened next was miscommunication or on purpose. There was several shots fired and five young men dead.
  • The Intolerable Acts
  • How DARE they be so ungrateful. I was being so very generous with the discount but they have gone to far this time.
  • The British East India company lost a lot of money because of the American boycott so they were desperate to get rid of the 17 million pounds of tea they had just sitting there. Lord North made the tea act and it made the tea so cheep it was cheaper than the smuggled tea the American were getting. But the colonists thought it was another try to tax them without consent.
  • When the tea ships first arrived they were greeted by angry protesters that didn't want them to unload the cargo, this made one ship already turn back with the tea still on board but they were ordered to stay until able to unload. The sons of liberty wanted to unload in their own way. That night, December 16, 1773, about 60 guys dressed as Mohawk Indians dumped about 90,000 pounds of tea into the water but leaving everything else in the ship pristine and un touched.
  • Outraged by what the colonists had done Lord North had believed that they had crossed the line and needed to be punished. All that anger led to them passing new laws that were very harsh, that's how it got it's name. Some of the laws were as follows, closing the harbor until all the tea was paid for and another was that Massachusetts was almost completely under British control. All of this lead to rebellion and the first meeting of the First Continental Congress meeting.
