The Narrator begins the story by explaining how he's not crazy.
I love the old man, he's never wronged me or insulted me but what was bothering me was his eye. He had the eye of a vulture and it haunted me day and night. I made up my mind to kill the old man, thus getting rid of his eye forever .
I have to get rid of that eye
Hello!
EXPOSITION
You should have seen how wisely I proceeded. with what caution with what foresight with what dissimulation I went to work. Every night, at about midnight, I went to the old man's room and watched him sleep.
what was that sound?
RISING ACTION
CLIMAX
Upon the eighth night I was more than usually cautious in opening the door. The old man's hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once and only once. In an instant I dragged him onto the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him. The old man was dead.
Now your eye will trouble me no more!!
At four o'clock, still dark in the middle of the night, police officers came and said a shriek was heard by the neighbor. They started asking questions about the old man. I answered them fearlessly. The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them.
The old man is simply out of town!
FALLING ACTION
May we have a look around then?
There was something wrong. I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. I was hearing a ringing in my ears. and it only grew louder and louder! Could they not hear it? I felt the need to scream and I could bear the ringing for no longer. Alas, I confessed to what I had done.
