  • Sofi I'm going to tell you about America's civil war and the children in it!
  • Grandfather and the children who had to do with the War in America?
  • The military requires that the soldiers were at least 18 years old, many of the soldiers were under 18 years old.
  • Grandpa, do you know any case of a child?
  • Yes, a ten year old boy named Johnny Clem became famous when he lowered his drum during the Battle of Shiloh, picked up a gun and shot a Confederate army colonel.
  • NO! How horrible!
  • Sofi children did this: Children still went to school during the Civil War. Much of what they learned was propaganda aimed at instilling patriotism towards the Union or the Confederacy. Many groups worked to raise funds for the armies and hospitals. The women and children held fairs and fundraising events and prepared aid packages for the soldiers they knew.
  • Wow they did quite a few things!

  • When the Wars began, living conditions became even more difficult for the average American. Many of the men joined the army or were drafted. The women stayed home to work on the farm or find work and support the family on their own.
