- Did you know that black holes actually exist?
- Like the ones in the movie Star Trek?
- Yes, Scientists have discovered more and more things about it
- Tell me more, I've always liked this stuff
- Black holes are formed when giant stars collapse at the end of their lifestyle
- That's really cool, but how does that cause a black hole
- Because of the stars small size and enormous mass the gravity will be so strong it will absorb the light and become a black hole
- So could we possibly be swallowed up and killed because of this black hole?
- No, the only way black holes are dangerous is if you are close to one. We are around 1500 light years away from them.
- Well if they are so far away how do we know that they are real?
- And these guys show up every now and then
- Scientists use gravitational waves to pick up signals. Gravitational waves are ripples that wrinkle in space in the aftermath of extreme events
- Oh yes I used to learn about something like that. Isn't it called LIGO that they use to detect the vibrations coming from the gravitational waves
