Storyboard Text

  • Santa Rosa of Lima was born in Lima on April 30th, in 1586, and was baptized with the name of Isabel Flores de Oliva. Her parents were Gaspar Flores, he was a Spanish soldier and María de Oliva, she was an indigenous seamstress.
  • She was baptized on May 25th, in 1586, in the Parish of San Sebastián, in her hometown. At three months of age a maid claimed to have seen her face transform into a rose, and since then she was called Rosa by her mother.
  • Since she was little she felt a strong religious vocation, for which she prayed frequently. At 10 she moved with her family to Quives and there she made her confirmation. At 15 she returned to Lima, and at 20 she became a Tertiary of the Santo Domingo Convent. She was a devotee of Saint Catherine of Siena.
  • In his house he embroidered beautiful clothes for sale, always singing for God, the Virgin María and the Child Jesus. She also went to hospitals to care for patients.
  • Near the end of her life, she fell seriously ill. She spent the last three months of her life in the home of Gonzalo de la Maza and María de Uzategui. Santa Rosa de Lima she died of tuberculosis at the age of 31, on August 24th, in 1617, in Lima.
  • A few days after his death, numerous testimonies were gathered about his life and virtues. She was canonized by Clement X on April 12th, in 1671, proclaiming her "Principal Patroness of the New World."
