  • Spekkoek is an Indonesian dish developed during the Dutch Colonization times. It is broken up as "Spek" beacon and "Koek" cake in dutch. Spekkoek contains spices of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, clove, and anise. The Indonesian version is Kue Lapis Legit, lapis from "Lapjes" meaning layers in dutch.
  • Both the Dutch and Indonesian versions are served in the same form which is normally square slices, though it can also both be served as cake wedge shapes. Both also being served as a dessert and for holidays.
  • Both Indonesian and Dutch versions of Spekkoek have layers and the colors are yellow and brown.
  • The dutch batter has 2 batters (Vanilla and spice layer) and the Indonesian version only contains 1 batter. Though only 1 batter, the browning effect from the grill causes it to have 2 colours like Spekkoek.
  • Though both versions have layers, the Dutch version has thicker layers and the Indonesian one has thinner layers. The Indonesian version has a minimum of 18 layers but can go up to 30 and the Dutch version has 18 layers normally.
  • Both versions were cooked with a Dutch over either with a charcoal fire or electric/gas oven.
