  • The Terror, was a period of violence during the French Revolution incited by conflict between two rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins.
  • Marked by mass executions of “the enemies of the revolution.” The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine and another 25,000 in summary executions across France.
  • After being convicted of conspiracy with foreign powers, and sentenced to death by the French National Convention, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine in the Place de la Revolution in Paris.
  • These were then specified as the rights of liberty, private property, the inviolability of the person, and resistance to oppression.
  • The basic principle of the Declaration was that all “men are born and remain free and equal in rights.
  • The flight to Varennes refers to a failed attempt by King Louis XVI and his family to escape from revolutionary Paris in June 1791
  • Napoleon Bonaparte took power in France on November 9th/10th 1799. The coup of 18/19 Brumaire in the Year VIII of the republican calendar is generally taken to mark the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of Napoleon Bonaparte's dictatorship.
  • On 20 June 1789, the members of the French Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath, voting "not to separate and to reassemble wherever necessary, until the Constitution of the kingdom is established". It was a pivotal event in the French Revolution.
