A boy named Salva is at school, listening to his teacher but he is watching the road that he would walk to go home with his eyes and his mind.
During school, his class hears gun fires. His teacher tells them to flee into the bush. Salva is now running into the bush away from the gun fire.
Salva joins a group of people and spent a night at a barn. Salva wakes-up and found himself with no one around. But soon after he finds a group of Dinka tribesmen and joins them on their journey to the closest refugee camp.
Salva has met a new friend that sadly is not with us and he has reunited with Uncle. Him and Uncle cross the Nile and they are now crossing the Akobo desert. They hope to make it to the closest refugee camp.
It has been years since Uncle has died. Salva has traveled to many refugee camps coming and going. He is now traveling to the Ifo refugee camp in Kenya with over twelve hundred boys that takes him a year and a half to get there.
Salva is in the refugee camp learning to read and playing volleyball. A rumor has spread around the camp saying that three thousand boys and men would be selected to live in America. He was one of those selected people and flies to New York and meets his new family.
