Storyboard Text

  • After getting upset at a comment Mrs. Dubose made about Atticus, and in his fit of anger he destroys her flowers. Atticus then makes Jem apologize and as a condition of his punishment he had to read to Mrs. Dubose for a month.
  • Sometiemes it's best to not act on feelings or instincts.
  • "'Easy does it, son,' Atticus would say. 'She's an old lady and she's ill. You just hold your head high and be a gentleman. Whatever she says to you, it's your job not to let her make you mad'" (Lee, Page 133)
  • A literary element that Lee uses in this scene of the book is when she describes Mrs. Dubose while she's laying in bed. She uses a simile to describe how the spit in Mrs. Dubose's mouth is like a slow moving glacier.
  • The effect of this literary element shows the readers how sick Mrs. Dubose might actually be, and how she can't really control anything.
  • I know that this scene is a coming of age moment because both Jem and Scout are learning that despite how everyone treated Mrs. Dubose she still managed to live honestly.
  • This scene shows a different perspective, which is Mrs. Dubose's perspective on life and how she lived.
  • An experience that relates to real life could be if someone in your life is honest with how they feel all the time, maybe you could take how they've been living and apply it into situations in your life your life when you may need it.
