Storyboard Text

  • Many British colonies enslaved West African people for labor. Southern Colonies with large farms depended on enslaved people to grow crops for them.
  • Starting in the late 1400s, Portuguese traders traveled to West Africa. They brought guns and other goods with them to trade for people to enslave in Portugal’s colonies. It was common to enslave people during this time in many parts of the world.
  • Some Africans got food because they were made to do it.
  • Later, many Europeans likewise justified their racist actions by claiming that West Africans were meant to be enslaved.
  • Portugal was able to grow in power by enslaving West Africans.
  • Newly enslaved Africans were forced to march across Africa to the western coast. These Africans were made to cross the western coast.
