Race is a social construct that differentiates a group of people due to physical characteristics such as skin colour, texture of hair and facial features(Whittington-Walsh,2018). The above image shows different people from different races randomly seated on a bus.

African American;good basketballer
Racism is a preconceived notion that one race is superior to another thereby causing discrimination. Racism categorizes people into majority/dominant group and minority group. The majority group have socioeconomic power. The minority group may be more populous but they lack power and voice(Whittington-Walsh,2018). Racism is characterized by prejudice and segregation. The above illustration shows segregation between black and white people in Alabama before1956 (Cavendish,2006).

According to Darwin's theory of evolution, man evolved from the ape and only the fittest species survive. Herbert Spencer applied Darwin's theory to the society. He says that human society started simple but a progressive society must advance to complex science and technology in other to survive. Societies that remain simple remains weak and powerless (Whittington-Walsh,2018)

According to Whittington-Walsh Little(2018), Stereotype is the generalization of a belief to a group of people. Stereotype characterizes a group of people based on the identification of a notion or idea and applies the idea to the whole group. Stereotype could be advantageous to a race or detrimental. The belief does not apply to all the people in the race. Stereotype promotes racism. It is believed that African Americans are good at playing basketball. This does not mean all African American players are good but it may favour an African American player.
In Harper Lee's famous book To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee narrates her experiences in a small town of Maycomb Alabama in 1930's. She describes a small tired town post-depression with the different races (mainly white and African Americans) that inhabit the town and their racial experiences. The African Americans in Maycomb experienced racism in every front: prejudice, discrimination segregation and institutional racism. The image shows segregation between the whites and blacks in the courtroom," the coloured balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second balcony" (lee, p.166)
According to Lee, the judicial system in Maycomb was prejudiced against the African Americans who are the minority group in Maycomb in the 1930's.Tom Robinson a black man was accused of raping Mayella. There was no concrete evidence found against him but most of the white residents of Maycomb and the judge found him guilty as charged. His skin colour condemned him. Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson's lawyer explains to his children that "In our courts when it's a white mans' word against a black mans' the white man always wins" (Lee, p.224).
