- Three rioters are drinking when they hear a funeral procession pass. A servant behind the bar reveals that an old friend was murdered by a mysterious figure named "Death." The rioters are outraged, and they decide to set out in their drunkenness to kill Death.
- While traveling to find Death, the men come across an old man. The men accuse the sorrowful man of working for Death, but he reassures them that he has been waiting for Death to meet him for some time. Then, the old man redirects the rioters to an oak tree.
- The men are surprised to find piles of gold under the oak tree that the old man directed them to. They decide to draw lots to determine who should go into town to retrieve bread and wine to pass time. The youngest rioter pulls the shortest stick and is sent into town.
- As the youngest rioter sets out for bread and wine, the other men devise a plan to dagger him when he returns to keep his share of the gold. Meanwhile, the youngest man plans to poison his companions to keep all of the gold for himself.
- When the youngest traveler returns to the oak tree, the two men dagger him. The bread and poisonous wine are left for the remaining men to feast on as they split up their gold.
- The three men meet their end due to selfishness and greed. The youngest rioter met his death with a dagger, and the others consumed poisonous drinks in their final celebration.
