In May 1972, as evidence would later show, members of Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President (known derisively as CREEP) broke into the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in the Watergate Hotel and stole copies of top-secret documents and bugged the office’s phones.
Nixon was trying to keep the burglars silent with hush money, prosecutors wanted tapes from the White House to implicate Nixon.
Nixon’s cover up fell apart, House of Representatives started the impeachment process, Nixon resigned after the tapes were released.
