- Tom Walker and his wife live in a sad house and fight with each other often. They are never happy.
- Tom takes a shortcut through the woods and meets a man who explains he is the devil. He sees pretty tress that are rotten on the inside.
- Tom tells his wife about the devil's offer. She want's tom to sell his soul so they can become rich, he refuses because she wants him to.
- Toms wife goes on her own with an apron full of valued items to make the deal herself. She never returned home.
- Tom makes a deal with the devil because he feels he did him a favor by getting rid of his wife. He becomes very wealthy but won't spend it.
- Tom becomes very devoted to religion after realizing he had sold his soul to the devil. It doesn't work and he gets taken by the devil. He now haunts the land.
