  • When Gina was diagnosed with Smith-Lemli Opitz Syndrome (SLOS), it caused a lot of worry for her mother but it also gave her strength to give Gina a chance at life. The syndrome gave a lot of challenges for the family but the chance to give Gina a good life uplifted the family to make the best out of everything.
  • Finding the right placement for Gina was the number one goal for Gina’s interest. Gina’s mother felt she deserved to be in a high functioning class, even though BOCES did not recommend it. But in the end Gina did very well in the high functioning class, her mother said it doesn’t hurt to stretch for the best opportunity.
  • Some ways teachers can help parents share their voice is by 1) having a after school program with other parents being able to share their thoughts
  • 2) Allowing parents to have their voices heard, an open line of communication is very helpful3) have the child/parents best interest in mind helps show that what the parent says affects what they do
  • 4) Lastly, teachers can help parents have their voices be heard by inviting them to a board meeting to share their insights with the school
  • Gina was put into a program out of her county that emphasized all the things her mother felt Gina preferred. More socialization, peer involvement, and communication. With this new program Gina was able to join school program s and even make a new program of her own, Peer Buddy.
