- during the civil war soldiers food were stuff like bacon, beans, and also had a daily 9 biscuit ration. Coffee was especially popular for soldiers in the morning
- "this coffee is really good"
- At the camp there were bands playing that would keep soldiers spirits up. People would also send many letters more than they received them. they also had weekly newspapers, post offices and more to improve camp life.
- During battles many wrote letters. the Battle also inspired hatred for their enemy, while African Americans were used as special targets in war. Lewis Douglass Fredrick Douglass's son also wrote a letter.

- Many soldiers went through surgery awake. A lot of them had died from shock from surgery and also diseases, colds, lack of food, and more. Common surgery was ampuation.
- there were more than 50,000 men who died in prison camps. Prisoners died from fatal diseases made the camp smell bad.

- In battle, African Americans were used as special targets. Commanders for black regiments were always white officers. Confederate authorized the use of slaves as armed military soldiers
