Chapter 2 Number the Stars

Chapter 2 begins with Kristi begging Annemarie to tell her a story about a King and a Queen. Annemarie begins to tell her a story and when Kirsti fell asleep she start remembering about the real King of Denmark King Christian X. She remembered how her older sister Lise used to take her to see King Christian X when she was younger when the King rode his horse through the town, she remembered that the King waived to them and that her sister told her that she would be special forever because a King had greeted her. Sadly her sister Lise died in a car accident right before her wedding and she always got sad when she remembered her. She also remembered an occasion when her dad told her a story shortly after the war began where the King was parading around town and a German soldier asked a boy, who is that? Referring to the King, the boy said that’s the King of Denmark, the German soldier didn’t believe it and he said if he is the King where are his bodyguards? The boy said the whole country of Denmark is his bodyguard. She also remembers that she asked her Dad about the German invasion and how the King allowed it and her dad explained to her that he knew they couldn’t fight the German Army and gave her the example of Norway. As she was laying in her bed she was getting upset about how things had changed in her house since her sister died and concluded that only fairytales had happily ever after endings.
